3 Steps to a Daily Check-In
What happens when people greet you with “How are you doing?” Do you
automatically reply or do you really know the answer? It’s too easy to rush into
our day by wolfing down breakfast, grabbing our to-do list and running out the
door ~ often before we’re even fully awake!
When we set aside a few minutes each morning to check in with ourselves, we are
able to approach the rest of the day with renewed intention and a clear vision
of our goals and needs. This creates a much more enjoyable and productive day
than feeling like a human pinball, being bounced around by “fate” and the whims
of others.
3 Steps to a Daily
Check- In
1. Pick a time during your regular morning routine and commit to spending five
minutes checking in with yourself. Perhaps the perfect time for you is when you
first wake up, before you even get out of bed; perhaps you prefer making time
before you eat breakfast. . . Select the time that’s right for you and commit to
it.
2. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to quiet your mind and settle
your body (your mind may not be easy to quiet at first ~ that’s okay, just stick
with the process!).
3. Ask yourself the following questions, and really listen for the response. You
may wish to have a notepad handy to write down your impressions.
-
How am I doing today?
-
How is my body feeling?
-
What’s on my mind right now?
-
What do I most need to know or be aware of today?
As you become more familiar with this process, you may wish to add other
questions to your morning check in, for example:
- What are my hopes and goals for the day? Identify the actions you
need to take today to move closer to these goals.
- What is my biggest fear for the day? Once this is identified, it will
become less powerful and you can take steps to move through and release it.
- What is my primary action step today? Choose the one action that will
make the biggest advancement toward your goals.
- What kind of mood am I in? Is this the mood you want to be in? If
not, what do you need to change it?
This daily Check-In will soon become an automatic (and beneficial) part of your
day!
